10 MILES! And a few bits of info...

Oh yeah!!

Kyle had Monday off from work so I decided to take a vacation day that day too. We thought it would be a perfect opportunity to do a training walk.

We mapped out a route on the American River Bike Trail that was 10 miles long. So, it has been a long time since I did 10 miles...since the last time I walked the 3-day! And this was Kyle's longest mileage for training. It was a really great day for it....the morning started out cool and breezy, however on the way back to the car it was a bit warmer (upper 80's - 89 degrees according to the car when we got back), and lots of sunshine! Kyle brought his iPod and we listened to music most of the way. We did two "Pit Stops" to snack and pee (very important!). I already knew that my pinky toe gets a blister on the bottom so I put Mole Skin around it before we even started -gotta be prepared! But by the second "Pit Stop" it needed more Mole Skin. That is the only problem I had the whole walk-well except for the heat.

It felt so good to finally get 10 miles under our belt. We followed it up with a quick 3 mile walk yesterday around the neighborhood. We are starting to think about the 18 mile training walk... thinking about where we should do that. The last time I did an 18 mile training walk my dad and I walked the trail in Monterey. That was awesome--once I was done...challenging to say the least.... but we did it! So I am really looking forward to doing another 18 miles. It feels good too because it gives us a little taste of what the 3-Day is going to be like-minus the cheering stations, people cheering us on, cars honking in support...etc..

Speaking of Cheering Stations: did you know you can come out and support the walkers during the 3-Day? As the event gets closer, follow this link for the times and locations of the cheering stations. Did you also know that you can send mail to the walkers? At camp they have a post office where we can go get mail. You can send them to:

3-Day for the Cure PO
ATTN: INSERT NAME OF PARTICIPANT
P.O. Box 20027
Piedmont, CA 94620

According to the website the mail should be postmarked by September 21st to ensure delivery, and only send envelopes...no boxes please. I received a few letters when I did the 3-day back in 2008, it was so nice-and very uplifting after a long day of pounding pavement for 20 + miles! On the supporter link I posted above they will also have information on the closing ceremonies and how you can come and show your support... it is an amazing experience to see all the walkers and crew gather together! Again, as it gets closer to October please feel free to check the link out--Bookmark it! ;)

Thanks for following our journey so far! Please stay tuned for more updates!

Sincerely,
Holly

Our First Crop for the Cure & Updates

Hello all! Time sure has gotten away from us. Woo! It is already August...unreal.

I wanted to share with you some of the photos and results of out April Crop for the Cure.

We had 14 croppers at the Folsom Vet's Hall on April 24th. We raised a total of $910.50 to help fight to end breast cancer forever. It was a full day of cropping, snacking and some bidding in the auction ; which included a LIVE auction of a Starbucks card. We are so very thankful to the Folsom Veteran's Hall for the use of their facility free of charge. Thank you also to our family--Our moms both hit their kitchens to cook and bake for the event---rumor has it that all the snacks were very yummy! Dinner was a homemade spaghetti dinner with garlic bread and salad. A big thanks, because I know the ladies were so thankful, to Steve (Kyle's dad) and Kyle for making that late night Starbucks run for about 10 orders. To the left is a photo of our dear scrapbooking friend, Monique Griffith (who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer - we are continuing to pray for miracles to happen in her journey), doing a Cricut Vinyl demonstration. We want to thank Monique for everything she did to help (donating the use of her tables and her power strips and your donation of kits to the auction). Thank yous are also in order for Laura Mason for using her cricut talents to make the name badges and signs for the event.

August 28th is our next Crop for the Cure. It is being held at the Elk's Lodge #6 in Sacramento. It is going to be a great time of scrapbooking again--our moms are making snacks again!! A whopping 12 1/2 hours of scrapbooking time--all for the purpose to raise money for an end to breast cancer. 100% of the money raised goes to the Susan G Komen 3-Day for the Cure. We have committed to raising $4600 for this cause, and we are currently at $1430 raised. We are getting some really great offers of items to put into our silent auction for this event, so if you are able to come, be prepared! Kyle is donating three of his beautiful pictures from Yosemite to go into the silent auction. Not to mention a donation from Stampin' Up, Tastefully Simple, and more scrapbooking supplies! To register for the event please go to: LermansAgainstBreastCancer.com.

Kyle and I picked August 28th because it would have been his Aunt Rhonda's 55th birthday. His aunt passed away from breast cancer nearly 14 years ago. I unfortunately never had the pleasure to meet her, but I have heard that she was an awesome person! My mother-in-law and Rhonda were BFFs, and hearing her stories makes me sad that I didn't get to meet her. We want to remember Rhonda on the day of her birthday by raising money for breast cancer research so that families don't have to experience the loss of a loved one as the Moss and Lerman families did. Rhonda and all the people that we personally know who have passed away and who are survivors are the reasons we are so passionate about raising money for breast cancer research.

Last week was the kick start of the Susan G Komen 3-Day events! Starting in Boston (last week) and Cleveland this week! It is so exciting to see pictures of the event on Facebook.... I am giddy!

Training Update

Admittedly we are behind on the suggested training that is given by the 3-Day folks. We went for a really great 8 mile walk a month and a half ago. Life has been busy since then: San Diego (Spirit West Coast), Monterey (second Spirit West Coast) and Washington, DC. Now that we are winding down with traveling it is time to kick up the training! I am smelling a double-digit training day soon!

Thank you for visiting! Don't forget to check out our website, and take a moment to consider donating to this cause! :)

Sincerely,
Holly & Kyle

A Little Update...

Hello all and thanks for visiting our blog!

I first want to start off by thanking those who have donated so far--we really truly can not thank you enough! Breast cancer has been so cruel to so many, we want to stop it-for GOOD! The April newsletter from Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure had the 2009 Report Card and I was so excited to see the results! Fifteen 3-Day events took place last year raising $91 Million for the fight to end breast cancer! Wow--$91 Million! That blows me away. The report card also mentioned that since the beginning of the 3-Day (est. 2003) $500 Million has been raised.

Our fundraising efforts are moving along. We are approaching our first fundraising "event" that will be held on April 24th. The event is a Crop for those who enjoy scrapbooking or paper crafting! We are so very thankful to the VFW Hall for donating that space--that means all monies raised goes right to Susan G Komen 3-Day for the Cure! We are excited about all of the other fundraising events we have in mind. We will keep ya posted!

Kyle and I participated in a 3-Day sponsored training kick-off last Saturday in Roseville @ the new shopping center, The Fountains. We arrived at the New Balance store around 9am. We received our little low-down about walking safety, grabbed a bottle of water and then we were hittin' the pavement/sidewalk! At the kick-off there was about 20 of us that did a 3.8 mile route during the cool and breezy morning. It was a great time! Kyle and I had the opportunity to share with two newbies our past experiences with the 3-Day, they had a lot of questions--as I did the first time I walked! So I always like to share with them and answer questions to settle their nervousness. After the walk Kyle and I went to DSW to see what kind of tennis shoes they had--we are both in dire need of new ones before we get too far into the training schedule. We didn't really find anything we were looking for, so we are gonna try Famous Footwear--they have Buy 1 Get 1 Half off, I like taking advantage of that deal especially on tennis shoes.

Officially, training starts on April 19th (the 24 week schedule)! I can't believe it is here already and boy oh boy am I ready! If you are interested, you can check out the schedule here. It is a suggested schedule so a walker can do as much or as little as they feel like. My goal is to do as much as possible, especially those double digit mile days!

We hope this finds everyone well! As always we will keep you up-to-date about our efforts in fundraising and training. If you would like to donate to either or both of us our links are to the right of this post under our picture.

Thank you again for your support!

Welcome to our journey!!

Thank you for checking out our brand new blog to share with you our thoughts and experiences regarding the upcoming Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk we will be a part of this year.  We hope you will continue to check in and follow us on our journey for the next several months.

For those unfamiliar with this event, the 3-day walk is a HUGE effort that raises an enormous amount of money toward finding a cure for breast cancer.  Holly and I are a part of the San Francisco rendition of the walk, but similar events are held at 14 other venues across the country each year as well.  Although 2009 numbers have not yet been published, all of the 3-day events held in 2008 brought in a grand total of over $110 million dollars!  Susan G. Komen has been involved in one way or another with every major advancement in the fight against breast cancer thus far.  The reputation of the organization and the fundraising power of the 3-day event make this an extremely worthwhile cause to donate to.

Holly and I are planning on being "walkers" at the event this year.  As walkers, we will be walking about 60 miles over the course of 3 days through the hilly streets of San Francisco this October.  Walkers are required to raise a minimum of $2300 each in order to participate in the walking aspect of the event.  We would appreciate your assistance in helping us reach our donation goals.  One-time donations as well as limited-term monthly donations are accepted.  For more information or to donate to Holly and I, please check out the links on the right sidebar of this page.  You can also check our progress toward reaching our goals by clicking on those same "Donate to Holly" or "Donate to Kyle" links on the right-hand side.

We are looking forward to the event this year.  Last year, we were both crew members who helped serve lunch to the walkers, and the previous year Holly was a walker.  In the future, we are also hoping to be crew members at one of the events in Tampa, FL, as well.  San Francisco makes a great setting for the event.  Check out the view we had from the camp at Crissy Field last year:

Thank you again for taking the time to check out a little bit about our journey toward the 3-day walk this coming October.  We appreciate your interest and would also appreciate if you would consider donating to us this year.  All donations are tax deductible.  Please check back soon for updated posts as we begin our journey to the 3-day walk this fall, including fundraising efforts, training walks, and more.  Take care.
